Newell Brands, the parent company of Yankee Candles and over 80 other brands, recently announced the closure of its distribution center at 175 Heritage Drive in Pataskala, Ohio. This decision will lead to the layoff of roughly 190 employees. The layoffs, set to start on March 8th, 2024, are expected to be permanent. It has been confirmed that the employees affected by this closure are not part of a union and do not possess bumping rights, which means they cannot claim other positions within the company. This closure represents a significant change in the operational structure of Newell Brands Distribution LLC, impacting a large segment of its workforce.
The closure is part of Newell Brands’ broader strategy of organizational realignment. This strategy aims to bolster commercial capabilities, focusing on improved consumer insights and more effective brand communication. This move is in line with the company’s strategic decisions made in June 2023 to concentrate on its most profitable and significant brands. The realignment strategy involves adopting a brand management approach across its global segments, reorganizing business unit finance structures, streamlining regional market approaches, and centralizing teams to improve efficiency and standardize processes.
Chris Peterson, the President and CEO of Newell Brands, has indicated that these changes are aimed at driving the company towards sustainable, profitable growth. The goal is to enhance accountability, minimize complexity, and reallocate resources for reinvestment. The company expects to complete most of these realignment actions by the end of 2024. It anticipates annual pre-tax savings in the range of $65 million to $90 million, net of reinvestments. The estimated restructuring costs are projected to be between $75 million and $90 million, with the majority of these charges expected to be incurred by the end of 2024. Furthermore, Newell Brands is planning to reduce office roles by about 7%, with the majority of these changes expected to be finalized by the end of the year.
